Considered by many nutritionists as the biggest food danger of our times, found on the blacklists of all authorities and marked for special levy proposals, threatened already by a few researches, juices are the focus of a new analysis published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Researchers say that there is ”convincing proof” that a too high a consumption of sweet drinks – containing added sugars such as maize syrup rich in fructose or as sucrose – can lead to weight gains and to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
This analysis – the broadest so far on this topic of sweetened drinks – pays a lot of attention to the role played by fructose in the development of these diseases, a major one actually.
“We, human beings, do not usually consume pure fructose. It is clear which is the source of fructose in our lives – juices, sweetened drinks using fructose. Our research underlines the emergency of reducing the consumption of these drinks through public health strategies”, says Frank Hu, a nutrition professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the coordinator of the analysis.
These are the numbers of the analysis enabling him to say this: a juice or two per day may increase by 26% the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, by 35% the risk of a heart attack or of a fatal heart disease.
It’s not that easy to ask for a juice after reading all that, right?
