Going to the gym and regular physical exercise has become, fortunately, a “healthy trend” among more and more Romanians who chose to fill the gyms from early in the morning to late at night after endless hours spent sitting at a desk. The question is: do we really know how to intelligently spend our time at the gym?
The latest studies from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, show that we don’t need to spend hours and hours in the gym in order to improve our health. All we need to do is to divide our effort into 3 rounds, 10 minutes each round, of intense physical exercise in order to reduce cholesterol values, reduce risks of various heart diseases, even lower the level of sugar in the blood for people suffering with Type 2 diabetes.
Such news can only make us happy, since it perfectly fits the busy schedule of modern man, always on the run, always saying “I don’t have time for the gym today”. Avinash Pandey from University of Ontario says that even a physical effort of 85% of maximum heart capacity, as compared to a medium effort of 65% that was the standard treatment for individuals suffering of diabetes, might be the key to success in managing various diseases.
Scientists have not decided yet over the reasons why the human body reacts better to this kind of stimuli, but it seems certain that the answer is very much connected with the way the body knows how to use its energy during and after training.
We are looking forward to future studies to analyse in more detail and on a larger scale the effects of intense exercise on the treatment of various diseases, but until then all we have to do is to try and find out on our own how effective physical exercise really is when it comes to benefitting our health.
